How can I plan a custom driving route on Apple Maps?

Apple Maps directions may offer a few routes to choose from; for me often 3 routes. Select one to set it. Add additional stops if you want to travel via a certain location on the way.
Use Google Maps instead if you want to be able to drag a midpoint to a different location/road.
