Depending on how long your laptop has been completely shutdown could affect the battery recharge ability.
Lithium batteries, not just the ones used in your Mac, cannot be left with little or no charge for extended periods of time (think months). If they are, they start losing their ability to be fully charged.
Even if this it not the case here, it does appear from what you provided, that your laptop's battery may be defective. It should not discharge fully overnight, especially if it has been properly shut down.
You can check what macOS thinks the battery status is by going to:
- System Settings > Battery > Battery Health
- It will show one of the following three results: Normal, Replace Soon, or Service Recommended
- You will also see the battery's Maximum Capacity value, with 100% being ideal (but even new batteries rarely have this value). Apple only considers that a battery requires replacing if that value is at 80% or less.
Please post back your findings.
Addendum: I just saw your second post, after I posted my reply. Yes, it is "normal" for the battery to drain a bit more rapidly after a recent macOS update or upgrade as numerous things happen in the background for the first day or so. However, this should return to normal after that.
