Apple Carplay Location Problem

Carplay Google maps, Apple maps and Waze, are all unable to keep the proper location and is off anywhere by a block or 1/2 mile away. I have seen this problem reported with multiple vehicles, and multiple iPhones for the last several years. I have a third-party Alipine in my 2016 Toyota. It was installed in April 2024. It worked fine until recently. Things started going crazy around January. I have tried every remedy that I found, some of them worked only once and the problem started again. One thing I can say for sure, if I turn off Carplay, my phone has no problems figuring out where it is and giving me the right directions. I have an iPhone 13 running IOS 18.3.1. In one forum thread, a developer posted that it is related to Apple’s integration with the vehicle’s GPS system where they do not have the problem Android phones because Android does not attempt to integrate with the vehicle’s GPS system. I had not changed anything to cause this problem. I highly suspect an iPhone update caused it. When I got into the Apline settings and got to the GPS Information screen, I reset something called VP Learning - and it worked really well - for one trip and started messing up again. This is very frustrating. The installer said there is no way to disconnect the GPS in the car because it is part of the radio.

I had the installer of my Alpine iLX-509 unit disconnect the GPS from the radio unit. Then I was no longer able to use my iPhone 13 to launch Carplay in wireless mode, as I got an error that the GPS was not connected. However, when I plugged in the USB cable, all maps are working great now. It is not the most ideal, but at least it works. My husband’s iPhone 8 also gave the same error and in order to start Carplay, it has to be plugged in via USB cable. This works better for us as using the Alpine in wireless mode, it was a hassle to try and get it to use the phone we wanted it to use, even if the other phone was not in the car. We also purchase a $50 bypass cable because it was impossible to get into the Settings on the Alpine unit, no matter how many times we pressed and released the parking brake.
