How can i get long press to repeat the keys instead of selecting special characters

Am I crazy in this world? I can’t imagine why long press gives special character menu instead of repeating the keys by default, it’s so annoying every time even I want to do the least coding i spent most of the time repeatly pressing the keys, and i checked a million times i have key repeat enabled while only non-letter keys work.

Apple has had this as default behavior for 14 years now. You can ask them to change it via

Be sure to explain just why repeating letter keys is important to you.

I think this is actually a developer problem, not directly an Apple one.

Case in point, while the accented character input has been a standard for a while (as Tom points out), Apple also gave developers a way to override it. Indeed, with no additional input (no pun intended :) ), terminal-based applications on MacOS (including Terminal.app, iTerm.app, Termius.app as the three I tested) all work 'as expected' and support keyboard navigation in vim (amongst other things)., without the accented overlay.

A quick look at the developer docs indicate that it's part of UIKit ( UIKit | Apple Developer Documentation ) and available on iOS and MacOS. Therefore I think it's up to the developer to add support (suppression?) of accented characters. Maybe reaching out to your terminal application of choice would help?

I already sent the feedback, and i guess i was just complaining, there is literally another thread talking about that and i can't just reply there to "up" it Disable long press for accented character… - Apple Community That's why i started a new one here.

The point is when using terminal you frequently need to use long press feature to repeat a certain key, especially in vim. It's quite clear it's been over a year and they don't really care about that. It's just a mistake to treat ipad as a portable replacement for macbook for quick coding.

It's ipad os btw, macos solution wouldn't work, but stil thanks
