To use AirTag to locate with keys, pair an AirTag with your iPhone or other Apple gear, acquire an AirTag key fob case in whatever style and color you like, and attach the AirTag fob to the keyring.

AirTag works when within 10 meters or so of an Apple device. It does not provide location information when not near other Apple gear. The Apple gear relaying the AirTag location does not need to be your gear.
