Using mac's speakers when in clamshell mode

I have an Acer external monitor with pretty bad speakers. When I put my Macbook air m1 in clamshell mode, connected to my Acer monitor, I sometimes prefer to use the mac's speakers. However I'm worried if using my mac's speakers with the lid closed is a bad thing to do.

Mac mini volume greyed out for monitor speakers I recently made the move from Windows 11 to a Mac mini. It hasn't been an easy transition but speaker volume seems very counter intuitive. To elaborate I have a monitor with built in speakers & Windows allowed me to control the volume. When I set up the Mac mini the default was internal speaker but when I changed it to monitor speakers the volume control became greyed out. I have now had to revert to the internal speaker solely because my monitor does not have the ability to control the volume.

Sound doesn't come from the monitor. Mac mini 2020 M1 which is connected to Thunderbolt2 Display via Apple USB-C to Thunderbolt adapter however sound doesn't come from the monitor, even though I set sound output display audio at System Preferences > sound.
