Data Migration But New MacBook Pro Goes To Sleep

Just got a new MacBook Pro and migrating my files over from my old one via WiFi. It is taking forever but down from over 49 hrs to about 4.5 hrs at this point. Problem is the new machine keeps going to sleep. I need to leave for a bit. Will this affect the migration?

And before anyone suggests, I cannot change the settings in the new one because I have not gotten the option yet to do anything with it but the migration.

Sorry, yeah was in the initial set up using the migration through set up assistant. There was no option to tether it with a cable to the old machine just WiFi, Time Machine, or an external hard drive. Maybe you could use the old machine as the “external hard drive” category?

It was taking forever to migrate my files over so while I was playing on my phone the screen (on the new computer) would begin the going to sleep process (darken before it goes to sleep). I’d always wake it as I was sitting there but it was a good hour or so and it still said there was 4.5 hrs to go. I had to leave so I just let it run its course.

When I did return about 4 hrs later, it DID finish the migration. So that is good for people to know if they have the same problem as I see from old posts some people have a very long migration time (longer than what I had).

Appreciate your response and links though. It may help someone else down the line.

I would hope not.

If it keeps going to sleep then you have already have been waking it up— so let it finish seems logical...

A cable connection would be much faster.

The most trouble free way to move to a new machine, is using the Setup Assistant on the initial boot of a brand new machine— you have one shot here. Set up your MacBook Pro - Apple Support

The second best way is use the Migration Assistant.
