Use external drive for apple music

I want to use my external drive as location for apple tv, music and photos.

O.k, what is the issue?


You can drag PhotosLibrary.photoslibrary files from the Pictures folder in your user folder out the external drive directly. Then just start the Photos app with the option key held down, click on Choose a Library and point it to the file you just moved to the external drive.

The external drive needs to be formatted as HFS+ or APFS for it to work. It won't work if it's formatted as fat32, exFat or NTFS.


For Apple Music and the Apple TV app, if they are consolidated, you can do the same thing for the entire Music and TV folders that contain the MusicLibrary.musiclibrary / TvLibrary.tvlibrary files and the Media folder for each with all the music and movie / tv files out to the external drive and then again start the Music App and TV app with the option key held down, click on Choose Library and point it to the file on the external drive.


If your music library is not consolidated you will need to do that first.
