How can I fix iPad keyboard lag issues?

Sometimes when typing I can get several words ahead of the keyboard because it takes so long for the characters I type to appear.

It’s also doing this weird thing where I type part of a word and then try to tap that word in the predictive text area. Instead of completing the word, it puts in a space where I stopped typing and turns on capslock.

I’m about ready to just use an external keyboard, which would seem to defeat the whole point of using a tablet.
