after being stored for a few months, I have reconnected the Apple TV but all I am getting is the settings and computer home page but don’t get any apps. How do I get it to work?

When the legacy models do not have a functional internet connection, they would show just Settings and Computers, as all the other app icons are loaded from the internet (Apple servers). Then the solution would be to set up the home network connection again (Wi-Fi or ethernet). It would remember previously used SSID network names and passwords, but if at least part of that has changed, then it wouldn’t be able to connect without manual assistance.

At this time, I would try a reset. Then set it up again “as new”.

Note that app availability depends on the Apple Account and the country or country-like region to which that account is set. Apple supports apps for Apple TV in the countries where it sells these devices. Other countries might not be supported, especially where Apple doesn’t provide video services.
