No pressure sensitivity with Apple Pencil 1st gen on iPad 6th gen in sketching apps

Hello I Have an Ipad 6th Gen (MR7J2LL/A : iOS 17.7.5). I bought Procreate and ordered 2 Apple Pencil 1st Gen from Walmart. I followed the initial instructions regarding plugging in, pairing, hard restart, forgetting and re-pairing, but the pressure sensitivity fails to register in Procreate, Fresco, Note Pad and a few other sketching apps.

In each, where possible I entered the Apple pencil configuration, testing, resetting and adjusting, but in all situations only the location of the tip and the tilt of the pencil were recognized.. no pressure sensitivity was ever registered.

Both pens paired just fine. With the second pencil , even though I had told my ipad to forget the device and turned off my Bluetooth, it was still able to control the iPad, even the tilt was recognized despite the Bluetooth being entirely off.

If it were just one pencil then I would assume I have a dud (I have already started the refund/replacement procedure with Walmart on the first one), but now that the second one is exhibiting the same issues, I'm suspect as to whether it's something I'm doing wrong.. or my ipad perhaps?

Any help would be super appreciated.. I've spent two days doing all manor of diagnostics and can't wait to find out what the issue really is.
