Support needed for iTunes Match with Apple Music App on Windows 11 PC

I just subscribed to iTunes Match after a couple decades of just syncing (selected) music to my iPhones via USB cable. I have a 300G-music library, so copying everything onto the phones was not feasible.

I decided to make the change because I want to get a HomePod and be able to stream music from an iCloud Library of music I already own.

My set-up includes

  • iPhone 14
  • iPad mini (6)
  • Windows 11 laptop with Apple Music App (recently transitioned from iTunes)

I know that it would take a long time to scan, match, and upload the whole thing. It seems to be working but I have the following issues:

  • Cloud status in the PC Apple Music App for some of the songs say “Error”
  • Songs that have been matched per the PC app show up greyed out on my Apple devices. The message when I clicked on them was either that the song has not been synced and I need to set it to sync on my PC app, or it claims that the song is not available in my country/region.
  • The existing playlists on my iTunes for Windows were not showing up in the Apple Music app.

My questions are:

  • What could have caused the “Error” and how do I execute a re-scan to see if the “Error” could be resolved?
  • Will a re-scan allow the Apple Music app to find the old playlists from the iTunes library index?
  • If the PC app is already set to sync, how come the songs are greyed out on the devices?
  • Since all my music was either imported from CDs I own or MP3s that o have bought, why would they not be available?

I don’t have and don’t plan on getting an Apple Music subscription, as my understanding of iTunes Match leads me to believe that it alone would do what I’d like the HomePod to do.

Any help or suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

It isn't always clear what causes an Error status. Try right-clicking and use Add to Cloud Library to try to rescan.

The Apple Music app is a really poor substitute for iTunes. I recommend uninstalling it along with Apple TV and Apple Devices so that iTunes can work correctly again.

For songs that appear on your device but won't play see If you have music that won't play on your device - Apple Community.

Only tracks that are purchased or have been successfully matched or uploaded will be visible from another library or your devices. Playlists that include excluded or invalid content don't get added to the cloud library. Apple Music lacks the ability to switch between libraries. Troubleshooting your cloud library should be easier with iTunes as you can swap between your original library and one that shows what has made it to the cloud.

Note that while it should be possible to access an iTunes Match cloud library from HomePod support is better for Apple Music. In particular the Recognize My Voice feature on HomePod may not be compatible with iTunes Match.
