Can I connect Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse separately to MacBook Pro M1 and Windows laptop without compromising connectivity?

I have a Magic Keyboard and Mouse that are mostly used with a MacBook Pro M1. From time to time I also have to use a Windows laptop but not both at the same time. I would be grateful if someone would confirm whether or not I can connect to these separately without compromising connectivity to either.

It is for fear of compromising this connectivity that I haven't tried it!

Short answer: Yes, you can connect the Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse separately to both your MacBook and Windows laptops, but switching back and forth may require re-pairing. Using a wired connection or a Bluetooth switch can make the process smoother.

A bit longer answer:

  • Apple’s Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse can only maintain an active Bluetooth connection with one device at a time.
  • If you pair them with your Windows laptop, they will temporarily disconnect from the MacBook.
  • To switch back, you will need to reconnect them manually in Bluetooth settings on the Mac or use a wired connection.
  • One option to simplify this is if you have a Lightning to USB-A or USB-C cable, you can connect both peripherals via USB when switching between devices. This allows you to use them instantly without needing to re-pair via Bluetooth.
