MacBook Airs with plain M4 chips support up to two displays with the lid open.

MacBook Air (13-inch, M4, 2025) - Tech Specs - Apple Support

MacBook Air (15-inch, M4, 2025) - Tech Specs - Apple Support

This is a first for MacBook Airs with M-series chips.

Note that the only way to plug two displays into the same USB-C port on a M4 MacBook Air in a hardware-supported way is to do so through a Thunderbolt dock or adapter. DisplayPort MST daisy-chaining will not work, and neither will "plain" USB-C hubs that provide two display outputs using its equivalent.

If you don't want to buy a Thunderbolt dock or adapter, you will need to use both of the M4 MacBook Air's USB-C ports to connect your two external displays. You could plug a plain USB-C hub into one port, then plug one display into it, but you would still need to plug the other display (or its adapter) into the Mac's other USB-C port.
