You can upgrade that Mac all the way to the current version of macOS: Sequoia.

If you're the cautious type, you could hang back on Sonoma, or even Ventura – but there is no point in stopping at Big Sur or Monterey. Neither is one of the "most recent three" that companies like Microsoft and Adobe support. Ventura will likely fall out of the "most recent three" some time between this September and November, and Apple already requires Sonoma or better to download the latest versions of (Pages, Numbers, Keynote).

So I'd suggest installing Sonoma or Sequoia.

FYI: I recently upgraded from Ventura to Sequoia. No real problems, except that there is one "feature" in Sequoia that may drive you up the wall. The switch to turn it on or off is in "Settings > Desktop & Dock" and is called "Drag windows to menu bar to fill screen." When this thing is on, if you are moving a window that fills most of the screen, and you barely brush the window bar, the window takes over the screen – which is almost NEVER what you want. I would recommend turning this switch off right away!
