How do I manually update my iMac 2019 when automatic updates fail?

In settings there is a notification to update my iMac, however every time I press on it to see the update it never loads. An update option never appears although my iMac keep telling me there is. Even though I have had automatic updates in my settings my iMac has not been updated since version 10.15.7. How do I update my iMac?

Go to the App Store and search for the macOS you want to upgrade to. If you find it you can download and install it.

If that's not doable try the following: in the past I've had better luck from the Safe Mode because I evidently had some 3rd party software that interfered with the downloading and installing so try the following:

#1 - boot into Safe Mode according to Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3-5 minutes as it's doing the following:

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed
• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)
• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically
• Disables user-installed fonts
• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

#2 - go to the System/Software Update preference pane and begin the download.

#3 - download and run the installer from the Safe Mode.

By chance do you have ANY of the following types of third party apps installed on your computer? There must be a reason auto-updates is not working so rather than changing your work flow, you should address the cause of the problem.

  • Antivirus
  • Cleaning
  • Security
  • VPN
  • Maintenance

The reason I asked about those types of apps is they have a very nasty habit of modifying and damaging Mac OS while doing absolutely nothing beneficial in return.
