I connected my iPhone 13 to my mac to back it up before upgrading to a new phone, and it said an update was needed first. It didn’t say what kind of update. The phone icon showed, and something transferred for a few seconds, and then everything went normally. The iPhone and mac were both already up to date with iOS. Should I be concerned with malware or anything? It’s never done that before. Thanks!
The update referenced can be an update to iTunes app (on older macOS) or to Finder (on newer macOS), if it’s the first time you’ve connected it to a Mac, or the first time connecting after some macOS upgrades.
The update gets downloaded in the background, and provides device support for the iPhone being connected.
You don’t have to do anything, in normal circumstances.
It is not a macOS update. At least, not in the familiar sense.

No. You should not be concerned at all. This is because your iPhone may have received a Carrier Update which is not an iOS update, however it is generated by your carrier.

A. Install a Cellular Update:
It might be prompting you for a Cellular update to install. So, go here for that. Update your carrier settings manually on your iPhone or iPad - Apple Support

The only way for an iPhone to be high jacked is if it has been jailbroken. And the only way to know that is has been jailbroken, is to just know it. So, who's the seller? If Apple, then no worries there.
B. Securing your iPhone:
Every-so-often, I'd say it'd be wise to set a passcode. On top of that, I recommend changing your passcode every-so-often, as someone might learn of it --particular someone you live with --and don't use your bank pin. Keep a copy of it stored in a location, incase you forget your passcode. As for keeping others from pestering you with scam calls and scam messages, Malwarebytes Mobile is what to use, as it is created by longterm users of these forums. I had just updated the mac OS, so it sounds like it may be due to that, as I had connected the phone before, but that was a while back and prior to a few iPhone iOS updates and at least one mac OS update. It’s a newer mac, so it sounds as though a Finder update would be a fair assumption. I really do appreciate your help.
