Using Preview to print multiple images/photos on one page--"layout" option missing

I'm using Monterey 12.7.6 but have the same issue with Sequoia on a new Macbook M4. I want to print two or three photos on a single page from Preview. (yes supposedly can use the Photos app for this but it is very difficult to use to select multiple photos from different albums).

The online help and instructions say

  • Access Layout Options: In the print dialog, click the "Layout" button (or scroll down to find it).
  • Choose Pages per Sheet: Find the "Pages per Sheet" dropdown and select the number of images you want to print on each sheet.
  • Print: Click the "Print" button to print the images.

But when I click print no "layout" button appears anywhere. Not an option. This should be a simple task but it is incredibly frustrating. I have this issue with many aspects of the Mac (I am relatively new to it, used Windows before)

Please help! Thank you

A couple of thoughts about things you're not really asking:

  • When I want to work with pictures from more than one album, I select pictures from the first one, choose File>New Album from Selection, and then I add pictures from other albums to this new one. One of the powers of Photos is that, albums being no more than lists of pictures, an image can be in more than one album with no extra space used. When I'm through, I just delete the new unneeded album. This seems way easier than importing to another app
  • In Photos, I love using File>Print>Contact Sheet:

I can choose how many pictures I want on the page, and I can include Titles, Captions, and all manner of things:

As I've scanned old family pictures, I've used Contact Sheets with "Save as PDF…"

to send copies to family members for their review.

I hope this helps…

The exact instructions you quote work fine on my MacBook Pro M1 Max running Sequoia 15.3.2 sending the output to an HP OfficeJet Pro. I know that some of the options in that dialog are printer model dependent.

It is possible that the Layout option for multiple pages per sheet is not available on your printer model or when using the generic AirPrint driver.
