Expired Apple Pay payments

I have an auto payment for a vendor- it was taken out on regular auto-pay date, drafted from my account but then funds were returned and stated “expired” to my account and to vendor’s account. What does this mean? There were sufficient funds and auto pay is still active- next payment set for 4/17/25
