I Have the IPhone xr, I have no complaints but, I wish I had purchased more memory when I bought this phone. I have looked at IPhone 16 with 1TB of memory, and have found in the UK 3 other reputable sites selling identical model to Apple UK site but cheaper than Apple. How can 3rd parties be selling their product cheaper?

They get them at wholesale prices from Apple. If they want to make less profit than they would selling them at full price, that's up to them.
Be careful. I don't know if it's still the case, but previously in the UK, devices sold by any retailer other than Apple would become carrier locked to the first carrier used on it. There may not be a contract involved, but the carrier subsidizes the price in exchange for a guarantee that the device will only be used on their network.

Resellers are free to set their own prices. Authorized retailers often offer deals and sales. Many carriers will subsidize the price of phones in order to rope customers into long term contracts.
Thank you for your prompt reply, I am not very tech savvy, so I am treading carefully, The main reason, other than increased memory needs, I am looking to upgrade is I have been informed due to age of my phone, Apple will no longer provide security upgrade patches after this year?
If you have an XR as your original post implies, Apple has made no such statements.
We should find out at WWDC in June whether the iPhone XR will be compatible with the next version of iOS.
Historically, the 2 previous versions will continue to receive critical security updates. As far as security goes, you should have another year or 2 of life left in the old phone.
