OS upgrades have been free to Mac owners for a very long time – since the release of Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) in October 2013.

Free to owners of compatible Macs. Compatibility depends on the model, including model year. Thus, for instance,

  • An iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2019) can be upgraded to the latest release of Sequoia.
  • An iMac (27-inch, Late 2013) can only be upgraded to the latest release of Catalina.

If your Mac is not compatible with an upgrade, it doesn't matter that the upgrade is free.

If your Mac qualifies to run Ventura, see How to download and install macOS - Apple Support .
