MacBook Pro 2017 horizontal lines across screen but not on monitor

Randomly after starting, my MacBook screen tears with these horizontal lines, but a screenshot does not pick them up, neither does it happen on the external monitor I have plugged in. I assume it's a software/graphics card issue? I tried resetting the NVRAM but there was no confirmation anything was reset as I held the Alt + Command + P + R keys.

artifacts that show on the built-in screen but NOT in a screenshot are generally caused by problems in the display itself, not inside the computer.

If you set your external to MIRROR displays, the EXACT same data is sent at exactly the same time to each display. If one display can not handle that data but the other can, it's likely a display problem.
