How to remove passcode and restore gifted iPhone 14 linked to a UK account from Europe?

My son was given a 2nd hand iphone 14 as a parting gift by our relatives in the UK during a visit to the UK (I am from the UK, but we now live in Europe). The original owner had not used the phone for a while and had been using a newer model. However, when my son turned on the phone on arriving in Greece it asked for the passcode. As I understand it, my niece's husband (the original owner) should have removed the phone from their account first but forgot to do so. When we phoned him he gave us two possible passcodes to try as he could not remember the passcode he had used. Neither worked. Failure resulted in the phone being locked for a number of hours.

What do they or indeed we have to do to remove the passcode and restore the phone (if that is the word)? Could anyone give me detailed instructions to tell the account owner and original owner of the phone so they can remove the phone from their account. They have apple accounts with icloud plans and so does my family. I do not want to unlock the phone in any illegal way that would invalidate anything or stop us from using our apple accounts. If it is permissible for them to gift a phone, what do they need to do at their end, and what do we need to do at ours? It makes it more difficult as the phone and the account it is linked to are in different countries. They are willing to share their account name and password with me, temporarily of course, and indeed have already done so, saying we should try signing in to itunes on a pc with their details and plugging the phone in to then restore it. My son tried this after downloading itunes on his pc but the program did not recognise the iphone for some reason (every option for device was greyed out). If it can only be done at our end with the phone here (they are family so it is not a problem), what do we need to do? However, I would prefer it if they could do it at their end as I am not very good at these things. Can they sign in to their icloud and do it that way? Thank you in advance for your help.

If it still has a passcode, it undoubtedly still has an iCloud account signed into it.

This is what the owner of the account that it is locked to needs to do:

The passcode is irrelevant, as you will be resetting the iPhone contents regardless. Reset will clear the passcode.

The Apple Account and Activation Lock absolutely needs to be removed. Reset will not clear Activation Lock.

Removal of Activation Lock can be done remotely using iCloud.

iPhone reset can be done locally on iOS 17 and later versions:

Otherwise on older iOS versions, you will need a computer to reset the iPhone:

The original owner tells me they had already removed their account from the phone. They say we should follow the use a computer option and hold the side buttons. This seems to what they are referring to - If you forgot your iPhone passcode or your iPhone is disabled - Apple Support . I am going to get my son to follow the steps from this and see if it works later today. I don't really understand how these things work and why it asks for a passcode when the previous account had been removed but hopefully the solution they suggest will work.

Thank you. We have had no luck. Have followed the instructions and Apple Devices on the PC does not recognise the iPhone, even though we get the PC icon and cable after holding down the side button. When turned on as normal, the phone asks for the passcode. Failure or even when it runs out of battery seems to result in the message: "iPhone Unavailable. Try Again in 3 hours". I am at my wits end. The original owner of the phone claims they have done the necessary steps to remove it from their account.
