Why aren't iCloud Drive changes on Mac Mini not showing on MacBook Air?

I have a Mac Mini and a MacBook Air. They are both set to use the same iCould account and they normally show the same files on iCloud Drive.

I deleted several iCloud Drive files on the Mac Mini but they remained on the MacBook, even after waiting an hour and rebooting the MacBook.

How long do such changes normally take? I expected they'd take no more than few minutes.

Preserving files in iCloud without dependence on iCloud Drive Am i missing something here? If i use iCloud drive on my mac to upload files to iCloud, they will only remain in iCloud if i keep those files in iCloud drive, therefore unable to free up space on macbook and/or have those files available forever in iCloud in the event of death or lost/stolen computer for family members to access.... I need my files to be independent of icloud drive or anything else influencing the deletion of any files in my icloud.... should i just turn off iCloud drive and drag n drop into iCloud, is this possible? thanks [Re-Titled by Moderator] Original Title: Preserving files in iCloud

New M4 Mini with external SSD - NO access to iCloud Drive. I've bought a new M4 Mini to replace my iMac, and have set up my account on an external SSD because the internal storage option was so expensive. Everything runs great until I get around to trying to share files with my other devices, which I have always done using iCloud Drive. But nothing shows up in the finder other than a link to Settings for iCloud. Sync there is turned on, but when I click 'learn more' I find (from Set up iCloud Drive on all of your devices - Apple Support (NZ)): "Note: If your Home folder isn’t located on your internal disk, or is a non-APFS volume, you must move the Home folder to an internal disk before you can set up iCloud Drive." It would have been good to know this before ordering my new Mac. Ironically, it looks like I can use iCloud Drive just fine from my Windows PC; but only Dropbox, Google Drive or some other file sharing from my new Mac. What a pain.
