How can I recover recently deleted notes?

I was under the impression that iPhones kept notes on the device and ALSO made copies on iCloud. When I tried to free up some space, I went on the iCloud function and removed the notes, but to my dismay they were removed from the iPhone as well. Is there a way to recoup them?

Look in the recently deleted folder in notes. If you did not also delete them from there, that's where you can recover them from.

Your initial understanding of how they are stored was not entirely correct.

They are synchronized between iCloud and your devices. Making a change, or deleting one, in one place will be reflected in iCloud and all of your devices.
