How to add a contact to a named group in the Messages app?

I know how to add a name to an un-named group in Messenger, but how is it done for a named group? When I try it tells me I must create a new group, but then the text history Is lost.

iPhone 14, iOS 18

Hello!

The only instance where you can add/remove people from a group in the iPhone Messages app is if it’s an iMessage group (the text messages are blue), and there are 4 or more people in the group.

If it’s an SMS, MMS, or RCS group, (the text messages are green, or there are android devices in the group) you cannot add/remove people.
