Different Behavior When Opening Links in Third-Party In-App Browsers

Hi all,

I’ve noticed some inconsistent behavior across different iPhones when opening links—such as Instagram links—inside third-party in-app browsers (like those embedded in other apps).

On some devices, tapping an Instagram link brings up a prompt that says something like “[App Name] wants to open Instagram.” After selecting “Open,” the browser will always redirect Instagram links to the Instagram app automatically, without asking again. I haven’t found a way to reset or change this behavior once it's been triggered.

On other iPhones, the prompt never appears, and Instagram links always open within the in-app browser, never redirecting to the Instagram app.

Additionally, using the long-press method (e.g., “Open in Safari” or “Open in [App]”) doesn’t seem to affect or change this behavior going forward.

Is there an iOS setting that controls this, or is the behavior just inconsistent between devices? Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
