Is it necessary to erase a stolen and locked MacBook Air via Find My?

My macbook air was stolen today. I am able to track it via find my. I have declared it “missing” and therefore it is locked. The police cannot help me and I don’t think I will be able to retrieve it. Do I need to also erase it? Is it necessary to safe guard my information?

If you are sure you cannot retrieve it then I would use the ease command. Even if you get it back after that you can use your backup to restore.

Thank you! This was helpful. But now it is saying the cards cannot be removed from apple pay on my computer. I have removed them from my iphone in apple pay thinking they are all synced. Now what do I do?
