In my experience, AirTags can occasionally get “confused” about proximity, especially if there’s any sort of intermittent Bluetooth or location issue on your iPhone. When your phone thinks the AirTag is separated, even when it isn’t, that’s usually a sign the background tracking isn’t syncing properly in real-time.
When this happens, here are some steps you can try to re-sync your tags:
First, we want to verify that Bluetooth and Location Services are enabled on your iPhone
- Make sure Bluetooth is on, and that you’ve got Location Services enabled for both Find My and System Services > Find My iPhone.
- Toggle Bluetooth off/on, and maybe even restart your iPhone
Next, let's reset the phone's network settings:
- Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.
- Note: You’ll lose saved Wi-Fi passwords, but it can resolve persistent location/Bluetooth drift issues.
Next, make sure your iPhone is on the latest iOS version. Apple silently updates AirTags over time when they’re near your phone and not moving — so leave the AirTag close to your phone for a while, ideally plugged into power overnight. You can’t manually force an update, but that’s the best way to trigger it.
If it’s consistently one specific tag causing problems, you might want to remove and re-add it. In Find My, tap the AirTag > scroll down > Remove Item. Then, hold the AirTag near your iPhone to pair it again.
Finally, if it’s been a while, pop the battery out of the AirTag, wait 10 seconds, then reinsert it. This can act like a soft reset.
