Can "Crash SOS" notifications be sent accidentally on iPhone?

I received a crash SOS from a friend’s iPhone. Apparently he had me listed as an emergency contact. I have not been able to reach him by phone since receiving this notification. My question is, can these be sent erroneously or is it definitely due to a detected crash? Is it possible that one could accidentally send this alert out? Similar to the emergency SOS call that I have acccidentally activated more than once.

Considering how it is designed to activate, I guess it is possible for a false positive. I've had my Apple Watch show a fall when I had hit my fist down on the counter once. It has to do with the jarring of the device, so I guess it is possible to show a crash if you dropped the phone on the floor of the car while driving, or something similar to that. I would be concerned too given the fact you have not been able to contact them since you received the message. I would keep trying until you received a notification from the person themselves.
