Front camera photo quality problem Iphone 16pro

After taking a picture in front of the window, the quality of the photo is dramatic. You can see a great deal of noise. Is this the correct operation of the phone?

iPhone 16 Pro, iOS 18

Noise is a by product of too low a light level in parts of your image. In digital photography, noise lives in the shadows. Eliminate the shadows and you’ll eliminate the noise.

Small sensors (all cell phones) suffer from noise in dark areas. They have a lower Signal to Noise ratio. All electronics have a noise floor or minimum noise the produce. The signal (light) needs to be much higher than the noise level. Unfortunately, small sensors do not capture/record as much light a big sensors. This results in small sensors producing more noise.

There are other factors that affect noise, but at the end of the day, adding more light to the scene resolves the issue.
