Ookla Speedtest Failure / Reliable App to Measure Internet Speed?

Hi,

Looking for a reliable app that tests my Internet speed on macOS and iOS (preferably GUI/app, not command line).

Ookla Speedtest is good if it works, but confusingly, it often refuses to measure connection speed even when I am connected to the Internet. I have experienced this on multiple (Mac/iPhone) systems and different types of Internet connections/providers.

a) Why is this so?

b) What is the best alternative to Ookla Speedtest?

Thank you!

EDIT: Screenshot of Ookla Speedtest.app vs Google in-browers speedtest on the same Mac, same connection, same time

Thanks. Google and Fast.com work fine, but something does not work with Ookla (both app and site) and Speediest.net (the page loads but the test does not connect). My (incomplete) understanding is that Fast uses Netflix CDN servers and Ookla uses geo-dynamic Cloudflare/Akamai CDN servers (?) for their test. While I do have VPN, Little Snitch and even Adblocker, they are all disabled (and running dig / curl / traceroute on speedtest.net shows nothing unusual), I think my system and Cloudflare/Akamai seem not to be on the best of terms, would be interesting to understand why but due to reasons of time (first world problem), I will probably not dig into this issue… 🤷‍♂️ (EDIT: was suspecting my ISP, but same issue on other ISP)

My use case is: horseracing two ISPs against one another to decide which one to keep. One is FTTB and one is mobile 5G. Can return either within 30 days, so I want to measure regularly to see speed and reliability to make the call. Sometimes I am also interested if a slow download is because my connection is slow or the server on the other end. I also use it to test if I am connected at all, because I found that browsers, depending on the situation, do not immediately “get” that I am back online. Also tested how big the difference between 2.4 and 5 really is, and if it is worth setting up 5 for better speed, even if it then can cause headaches with older smart home devices etc. etc (answer is yes) … So I actually use it relatively often.
