Why does Siri not turn flashlight on when my iPhone can't see my face?

Before one of the current updates, Siri stopped turning on and off via voice command "if" my iPhone cannot see my face.

I am handicapped so I cannot always reach my iPhone, so I would often say "Siri, turn on flashlight" and it would turn on.

Now if my iPhone cannot see my face, Siri responds: "Sorry I can't do that right now."

HELP please!!!!

When you try to unlock your iPhone with Face ID in a low-light environment, the flashlight does not come into play. Instead, your iPhone pulls a clever little trick:

  • Your display (screen) acts as a soft light source, brightening up just enough to illuminate your face.
  • Face ID uses a flood illuminator (an infrared light you can’t see) to scan your face. This happens entirely in the infrared spectrum, so it doesn’t need visible light like the flashlight provides.
  • That little screen-brightness bump is what helps Face ID “see” you better in the dark — kind of like Night Vision’s stylish cousin.

You can leave your flashlight off and your cool factor on — Face ID has night ops training and can handle the dark all on its own.

I'm having the same problem as the OP and I have the setting for Allow Siri When Locked turned on and have since I got my new iPhone. But Siri will not turn on the flashlight unless they can see my face.

It also has nothing to do with trying "to unlock your iPhone with Face ID in a low-light environment" as another person commented. I just want to use my flashlight by having Siri turn on the flashlight every time I ask, not just when they can see my face.
