Why does noise canceling AirPods make a whirring sound?

When I turn on any kind of noise control (transparency, ANC, or adaptive) there’s a strange whirring sound in the left ear. I got them on Christmas and they’ve worked fine since then. It seems like the issue is only occasionally however. When I was at the YMCA I didn’t notice it and completely forgot about it from last night; same with when I was in the car. Then I got to my room and turned them on, and the issue started again. The sound is similar to that of Any help is appreciated.
