iPhone sometimes charges to 100% even with charge limit set to 80%

I bought my iPhone 15 Pro Max about 8-9 months ago. Right after purchase I turned on the charge limiter to only charge to 80% overnight. 4-5 times total I have woken up in the morning with my phone showing 100% charge but I never asked it to, and specifically asked it not to charge above 80%.

Is there something I’m missing?

"If you have a Charge Limit set to less than 100 percent, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 percent to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates."

iphone batteries need to recalibrate periodically. It cause no harm to the battery and is a requirement to learn what 100% charge is and then charge only to 80% as you have set.

All lithium ion batteries chemically age in a non-linear fashion. This means 100%charge is always declining and the charging algorithm has to periodically be re-calibrated to maintain best battery performance.

The frequency of recalibration will vary with use and to a lesser degree age. It may range from every few months to as often as multiple times a month. Again, this is normal, causes no harm and settles into a less frequent occurrence once iPhone usage is consistent. Irregular usage, very heavy usage and inconsistent usage may trigger the need for initially more frequent recalibration.
