Think my iPhone is about to go kaput and I’m going to the USA tomorrow. If I buy a new iPhone from Apple will the warranty be covered in the UK home country

Yes, Apple International Worldwide Warranty will provide coverage. UK has multiple Apple Retail Stores. Some Apple Authorized Service Providers may refuse some service due to parts issues or specific repairs exceeding their capabilities.
