iPhone 16 Pro photo quality degrades after I add text

I never had this problem with my iPhone 11. Are there any settings I need to change? It happens whether I add the text in the Photos app on my phone or Macbook Pro (M1; Sequoia 15.4.1)

iPad, iPadOS 18

What kind of added text are you asking about?

Are you adding text to the metadata (title, caption) or are you adding text with the markup tool as a graphics overlay? When you are modifying the image by scribbling onto it, Photos will render a new edited version of the photo, and this may have a higher rate of compression and the less quality.

You may want to check, if the original image file has still the full quality by exporting the image with File > Export > Export unmodified original. Does the original still have the full resolution and quality or has it also been changed?

Sorry, Richard.Taylor and Mark, your replies have been hidden, when I replied.

Steps I took:

  1. Took a picture using iPhone 16 Pro
  2. Looked at picture on MBP's Photos app
  3. Clicked on Edit->Markup->Text icon
  4. Typed the text
  5. Clicked on Save Changes
  6. Voilà -- Saw a dull picture with text
  7. File->Export->Export 1 Photo (jpeg, quality high, full size)
  8. Dull jpeg picture from step #6

The only differences when I used my iPhone 11 as late as mid-November last year were:

Step 1: Used iP11

Step 6: Picture looked the same except for the text I added on it. It didn't matter whether I edited the picture with adjustments (e.g., brilliance, exposure, etc) before or after adding the text or not even doing any editing at all but the picture always looked the SAME except for the added text.

Step 8: Jpeg picture looks like the same picture with overlayed text in the Photos app

Here's something I found out after playing around with some photos.

With the HDR is turned on in the MBP's Photos app (note: it has always been on):

  1. Photos are enhanced (iP11, iP16P). Of course.
  2. Using Markup Edit, I can add overlayed text to iP11's photo and the HDR effect remains. However, if I add overlayed text to iP16P's photo, the HDR effect disappears. Actually, doing nothing in Markup Edit and just clicking on Save Changes does the same thing for iP16P's photo.

Why does the Markup->Edit->Save Changes do anything to the iP16P's photo other than any markup done if any?

I don't think that I see this. Can you describe what you man by "photo quality?" For instance, does the number of pixels, shown in the info window, change? Are there any other changes shown in the info window? If you export the picture using "File>Export nn Photos" at full quality in Photos on the Mac, does the picture change?

By "add text" do you mean using the Markup function in Edit mode?

Let us know…

When I use these export settings in Photos for Mac, the exported version will have the same dimensions 4000x3000 as the original image and even a slightly larger file size.

With JPEG Quality "High" instead of "Maximum", the file size will be slightly less than the file size of the original.

More testing:

  • Size of the Original: 5.6 MB
  • File > Export : Jpeg Quality High: 3.2 MB
  • File > Export : Jpeg Quality Maximum: 7.6
  • Drag and Drop: 3.6 MB
  • Copy and Paste: 4.8 MB

"Photo quality" as how it's displayed in the Photos app and what it looks like when exported as jpeg. Size of original: 5712x4284; with text: 2100x1576. Yes, "add text" using the Markup function in Edit mode. I tried attaching the sample images here but the original/without text version (from the Photos app or the saved jpeg) is somehow degraded like the one with the added text when UPLOADED so it's moot. I'm hoping that someone else has noticed this discrepancy or can recreate it and tell me what's going on. It's so annoying that as soon as I hit the "Save Changes" button after adding the text, boom, I'm presented with a DULL version of the photo and if I try to do adjustments like a little exposure tweak, details get lost (highlights galore).
