Why does cropping make my photos blurry on iMac?

I am using MacOS Sequoia (M1 chip) iMac.

When I import a jpeg, into photos,

then select "edit", and

select "crop" initially it does nothing.

Then the image it goes blurry, and the screen goes blank.

Are you using iCloud Photos?

Do you use "Optimize Storage" for Photos?

Can you edit the picture at all?

I ask because, to edit or crop a picture, Photos needs the full original file. Sometimes Photos loses track of the original.

Another thing to check is, in Photos' Settings>General

do you have "Importing" checked?

Well, it sounds like Photos has lost the connection with original. Since you're sure that the import-copy box is checked, then the original must have been copied into the Library. Since you use iCloud, then that original should have been copied to iCloud.com. "Optimize Storage" saves space by removing the original, and retrieving it from iCloud when it's needed.

What do you find at iCloud.com? If the picture is there, you could down load it and re-import it to Photos.

The jpg you say came from a pdf file--is it a screenshot from there? Photos doesn't recognize pdf pictures. Do you know how many pixels it is? That may be in the Info window.

Thank you Richard.

Yes, I am using iCloud photos

I have turned on Optimise storage

No, I cannot edit the picture at all.

Yes, checked the settings as you suggested.

The jpg is a saved pdf from a WORD document which was then imported to Photos.

The original image was a jpg onto which I have placed text when in the WORD format.

However, also, I imported a new photo jpeg into Photos, and it did the same blurry response when in the edit-crop mode. And the edit function was inactive. I restarted the iMac and it did it again. Then I repeated and it cropped. But the original jpg, which is the basis of this enquiry, remains unworkable.

Any thoughts welcome!!
