dictionary feature stopped working in apple translate iPhone 13mini

Always before I could touch the dictionary icon and then touch individual Chinese Mandarin (simplified) characters and get English translations. Now dictionary screen comes up but is stuck on first word/character and won’t respond to touching other characters. iOS 18.4.1

iPhone 13 mini, iOS 18

OK. I uploaded the screenshots, one of which shows “gratitude” highlighted and the dictionary entry for that word. In the past I could touch any other word on the screen and the dictionary would open its entry, including the Chinese characters. Now it is stuck on the first word in the translation and won’t respond to touches anywhere on the screen.

I am using Apple Translate, which is one of their default utilities. Today I removed it from my phone (delete app), shut down and rebooted the phone (iOS 18.4.1) (iPhone 13mini) and then went to the app store and reloaded the app. Same problem exactly.

I paste a phrase into the top box “Chinese(Mandarin, Simplified)” and it translates it to English just fine. Below the translation appear three icons: Maximize(two arrows pointed away from each other), Star, Copy.

Previously there were 4 icons: Maximize, Star, Dictionary, Copy. Now I only get the Dictionary icon(looks more like a paper towel dispenser than a dictionary) when I touch NEXT, roll to the next translation box, and then scroll back to where I was.

Now when I touch the Dictionary icon Dictionary app pops up on the lower half of the screen with the first word in the English translation highlighted and defined. Not usually what I need. I am an English native speaker.

Previously I could touch any word on the screen and the Dictionary app would (usually- sometimes it would hang up with the highlight not following where I touched but the translation popping up ok) highlight the word I touched and pop up the translation of that Chinese character or word. This behavior is what I want and need as I continue my study of Chinese.

Is anyone else experiencing this new, changed behavior since updating to iOS 18.4.1?
