I had about three different MacBook Pros (Intel, very thin case 15" circa 2016 - 2019) where the battery swelled it distorted the case. They were all the same style of case. There were no battery warnings. Once I heard a couple of very loud cracks when the case expanded. I stopped using the laptop and disconnected from power each time before having the laptop replaced.
I noticed the swelling because the laptop's rubber feet weren't contacting a flat surface and the laptop would easily move. There was a significant bulge in the middle of the laptop which the laptop rested on rather than the rubber feet.
The M1 MacBook Pro is thicker and hasn't had this issue. I suspect the issue was related to a build up of heat and the M1 is cooler and thicker than the Intel MacBook Pro.
If you are concerned I'd let someone take a look at it.
