Sudden Black Screen and Charging Issue After Shutdown on iPhone 16 Pro: Is It a Hardware or Software Bug?
About 24 days into using my iPhone 16 Pro with only 5 battery cycles, I encountered a serious issue: After I manually shut down the device at a battery of 82%, it never turned back on despite trying all known methods to power it up.
I attempted all known force restart methods (volume up → volume down → hold power), but nothing worked. authorized Apple support team in my country couldn't either, so they connected it to their system and managed to reboot it, it passed all diagnostics showed no hardware or software issues.
However, after the reboot that the technicians did, a new problem appeared: the phone would no longer charge via the cable — only wireless charging worked. The Apple support team eventually resorted to a factory reset as a last step, which did resolve the issue. No hardware was replaced, but no explanation was given for either the black screen or the charging bug.
One technician mentioned that several other users had come in with the same issue on iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max models that same day.
Has anyone else experienced this issue?
If so, do we know what the root cause might be?
Is this likely to be a hardware issue with the iPhone 16 Pro, or a bug in the iOS system?
Also, is there any way to guarantee that it won’t happen again?
Answers to some common questions others might ask:
- iOS Version: The issue occurred while running iOS 18.4.1.
- Always-On Display: I have never enabled the Always-On Display feature.
- Physical Condition: The phone had no drops, no physical damage, no water exposure, and was not charging at the time the issue occurred.
- Storage: My storage was not full or even close to full, so it’s unlikely the issue was related to memory overload.
- Apple Diagnostics: Authorized Apple technicians ran a full diagnostic and found no hardware or software faults. They couldn’t identify a cause, but they did mention that several other users came in with the exact same issue on the same day.
- Why I turned it off: I have a habit of switching off my phone if I’m not using it for over an hour. I wasn’t using it heavily before that and didn’t experience any glitches or issues leading up to it.
