Can iPhone be unlocked without erasing?

Hi there,

‘A friend of mine is giving his uncles iPhone to me so I can try to unlock it. The uncle sadly passed away a few weeks ago. They need the photos and data off of it. If I contact Apple and provide them with records such as a death certificate will they be able to unlock it? Thanks

My condolences to your friend's uncle. In addition to the death certificate, you will likely also need a court order that names you the rightful inheritor of the data.

Now Apple won't be able to unlock your iPhone past the passcode screen, as that is encrypted and only the person that sets it can unlock it to access the data. But they can grant you access to the account, which will allow you to retrieve the photos and data on iCloud on the web.
