Why do I need to tap multiple times to delete calls on my iPhone?

While going through the call history to delete past calls on my iPhone 13Pro (now running iOS 18.4.1), I've been noticing that I have to tap 2-3 times on many calls to/from my family members to remove them. This started happening sometime in the past couple of months, maybe since updating to iOS 18.x.x? I'm not really sure how long it's been going on, but it is very annoying.

Is this happening to anyone else?

Did Apple implemented this change, maybe to help prevent accidental deletions, or to slow the deletion process for other purposes?

Is there a workaround or a way to correct this?

I haven't reported it to Apple as a bug, at least not yet, because I'm not sure it is one, or if it's a new feature they implemented.

I’ve seen screen protectors effectively wear out from repeated actions. If you swipe the number of times a day you suggest, it’s a possibility, especially when combined with email app actions and other probable swipes.

Other possibilities include an iOS bug or hardware fault necessitating a screen replacement. Apple can review the issue better than we can speculate. 😀

You can have Apple perform diagnostics on your iPhone. It can be done in person at an Apple Retail Store or at an Apple Authorized Service Provider. You can also contact Apple Support and request remote diagnostics.

To delete all calls:

  • Tap Edit at the top left
  • Tap Select - this will mark all with a “-"
  • Tap Clear

I've been swiping left and tapping the trash can icon to delete calls on iPhones for years w/o any issues, but lately, every time I go to clean out the call history on this iPhone, it takes 2-3x of swiping, then tapping the trash can icon to actually delete many of the calls. It doesn't happen with all of them, but with those it does, it's very annoying.

I've been looking but I cannot seem to find anything yet, other than what I linked. There is also information that the phone will hold up to 1000, but only display 100. Once you exceed 100, it starts dropping off the older ones. While I know that you can change the tabs from All to Missed, if I look at the list the red missed calls bothers me, so every once in a while I tend to delete mine too.

Jeff: the info about my iPhone is in my original post at the top. Yes, I'm using a screen protector, but it's been on there for 3 yrs., and it makes no difference anyway. Some calls delete immediately after swiping and tapping trash icon, while others take more than one attempt to delete. This is a new issue that only started happening in the past month or so.

Also not true anymore.

Thanks Jef. Btw, I already know how to reach Apple support and I know where all the Apple stores and Authorized service places are within 75 miles of my home (an easy web search) too. I've been in the Apple-sphere since the 1980s. I was a software engineer/programmer for much of the 1980s too. I spoke to Apple support, but since I'd already deleted the calls I wanted to today, doing a phone screen share was moot. Will try again another day, after enough calls have accumulated in the call list that it annoys me.

I know I can clear all the calls in one shot, but I'm just wanting to clear some of them, mainly the spam numbers that come in as Silent, and a few others, while leaving the rest.

I can't find anything different about the calls that go away with one swipe left and one trash bin tap vs. the ones requiring multiple swipes and bin taps. Maybe it happens because there are multiple calls to/from the same number, such as from family and friends, that show up as (x) after their name in my recent call list? I'll pay closer attention to that when next I do a call clearing.
