If you want to run iOS 16, you will need an iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X.

The iPhone 7 Plus cannot run iOS 16.

But, since you will be looking for a new iPhone, it would really make sense to buy a phone that will handle the current iOS 18 version.

An iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, or iPhone SE 1 isn't capable of 16 or above; they require an A11 or better CPU.
