What is the model year of the "older iMace?" It may be too old to support Internet Recovery and requires that you have the original DVDs (they are specific to that exact machine or that exact configuration) to re-install Mac OS.

If it cannot complete the install that means the computer’s hard disk is likely kaput! Take it to an Apple Authorized Service Provider to be professionally diagnosed.
Who did you purchase the iMac from?
Try unplugging the power cord from the back of the iMac for about 5 minutes, plug it back in and try normal booting up again.
It’s from 2017 and ran on MacOS 12 Monterey
Why do you need to use Internet Recovery, please be VERY specific!!!!!! IF you recently acquired this machine as a used Mac then there are much more serious issues that need to be addressed.
Repeatedly, the computer auto shut down after a short while. Therefore I had to go to support and got the hint to go for a restart in recovery mode. I did so. At one point, it always failed...
I bought it from an authorized seller/ shop of Apple products here in Berlin. The plug off/ plug in thing just didn't work and lead to a blinking folder with a question mark...
