Why do my ENVY 7200e printer makes grinding noises and says that the paper isn't loaded correctly?

I bought this printer from the Apple Store. It makes grinding noises and says that the paper isn't loaded correctly. I think it is defective. Has anyone experienced this and gotten resolution?

The grinding noise and the "paper isn't loaded correctly" error on your printer typically point to a mechanical problem in the paper feed system. This can be caused by misaligned or jammed paper, worn rollers, or even a defect straight out of the box.


Here’s what you can try before assuming it's defective:


  1. Turn off the printer completely, unplug it for about a minute, and plug it back in. Sometimes this clears internal error states.
  2. Remove the paper stack, fan the pages, and reinsert it. Make sure the guides in the tray are snug against the paper but not too tight.
  3. Open the access areas (both front and back) and inspect for any jammed bits of paper or debris. If you have access to a flashlight, check the feed rollers and see if they’re spinning correctly.
  4. Through the printer’s touch panel or app, reset it to defaults to ensure it’s not a config glitch.
  5. Make sure the printer’s firmware is up to date using HP Smart.


If the grinding persists and especially if the tray is definitely loaded properly, you’re likely dealing with a mechanical defect — possibly a misaligned gear or a faulty paper sensor. Since you bought it from the Apple Store, you should return it to the store so they can verify if this printer is truly defective and offer you a replacement.

Given that the printer was purchased new directly from an Apple Store, Apple should be your first port-of-call for any device warranty issues - as the retailer has responsibility in the first instance for warranty issues. In many countries, your right of remedy is initially with the supplying retailer.


If you cannot obtain a satisfactory remedy from the retailer, you can fall-back upon the manufacturer's warranty - in this instance, with HP.


NB: HP's telephone support resources are based in Malaysia). Speaking of personal experience, I cannot fault the thoroughness and speed at which a fault was remedied by HP by way of replacement.

Thank you for the ideas. Here is the result: 1) Unplugging for a minute or so did not clear any internal error states or there were not any to be cleared. 2) Removing, fanning, and reinserting the paper did not have the desired effect. 3) The printer is new and, upon inspection, there are no bits of paper or debris in the rollers or gears. 4) I can not access the main menu on the touch screen because it refuses to clear the Paper Jam message. 5) HP Smart states that the firmware has been updated. HP Smart also won't allow the use of alignment, head cleaning, or maintenance tools until the "detected" jam is cleared.


Since this issue occurred right out of the box, I am inclined to believe that the issue is a defect. This issue occurs during the initial automated sequence that the printer puts itself through upon startup. I can ask Apple for help on this but my suspicion is they will tell me to call HP.
