All of the M4-family MacBook Pros have a good selection of ports, and can drive two external displays. All of them should be pretty fast – given enough RAM. So if you don't need the stronger GPUs that come with the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, the plain M4 MacBook Pro could be a good choice.

Don't skimp on RAM or on internal SSD space. You cannot upgrade either after purchase, and if you get too little, the pain of working with an under-specified computer may persist long after you've forgotten about the "savings".

My suggestion would be to

  • Get at least 24 GB of RAM – and consider getting 32 GB. (If you were doing things that required extremely large amounts of RAM, you could consider a M4 Pro MacBook Pro with 48 GB of RAM. I suspect that's overkill.)
  • Get at least 1 TB of internal SSD space. You can make 512 GB work – with the aid of external drives – and there are a number of portable SSDs available (including some 4 TB ones that are the size of a credit card). However, given that this is a notebook computer, I suspect that it will be convenient if the internal SSD has enough space that it can hold currently-active projects and spare you from having to constantly plug an an external SSD while you are "on the go."
