2024 Macbook Air keyboard and trackpad misbehaving

I have a 2024 Macbook Air running on 15.4.1 and its keyboard and trackpad are not working properly after only a few months' of use. Upgrading to 15.4.1 did not fix the problem.

The keyboard would type in capital letters when caps lock is not on, and it will default to typing out the symbol associated with each number key instead of the actual number. The trackpad won't perform the function I'd like it to perform. For example, instead of selecting one email in Mail, it will select multiple emails at the same time, and when I try to close a window, nothing happens. Instead of bringing up the cursor which would then allow me to type, clicking on the trackpad selects sections of text randomly.

The keyboard and trackpad would be working fine and then within a few minutes the problem would start. Then it would take about 1 to 3 minutes before everything reverts back to normal, only to have the cycle repeat itself.

Here's a video that illustrates the problem: https://youtu.be/VOkWLODahao

This problem renders my laptop unusable. Please help. Thank you.

I have taken my laptop to Apple and they think that my keyboard has to be replaced because my shift keys are "sticky". If I open the keyboard viewer, after I press shift on my physical keyboard, the shift keys will remain highlighted on the viewer for a long while. If I use the keyboard viewer to press shift, then there is no issue. Is this indeed a hardware issue? I don't want to leave them with my laptop unless I absolutely must.

Hi Jack,

This issue occurs across the board. I think my "shift" keys are causing the problem. PRESSINg shift seems to make the keyboard type in caps for a while (as you can see here, in the beginning of this sentence, pressing shift-p caused the keyboard to remain in caps for the following six letters). I cannot get out of this problem until I keep pressing random letters until the computer manages to snap out of it. Do you think this is a software or hardware issue? I tried to start up my mac in safe mode, but it isn't giving me the option to even though i followed the instructions. Thank you.
