Why is my iPhone 16 Pro receiving messages in flight mode?

I recently bought an iPhone 16 Pro and noticed that I keep receiving text messages even when the phone is in flight mode. Why is this happening? I never had this issue with the iPhone 13 or 14.

If you have wifi turned on you will still be able to send and receive iMessages, and if you have wifi calling enabled for your account, make and receive calls and send and receive sms and mms messages.

AirPlane mode shuts off cellular. It may or may not shut off Wi-Fi or Bluetooth, and iPhone will remember the previous Wi-Fi and Bluetooth settings in Airplane mode when next engaging Airplane mode; settings will persist.

While it remains a US FAA requirement, as well as in some other places, the whole concept of Airplane mode is fading, in practical terms. EASA has allowed full usage for a decade. And picocells are also now being installed.
