Looking for Advice: Arrow Key Replacement on MacBook Air

Hi all,

I recently ran into a hardware issue with my MacBook Air. Something got stuck under the down arrow key, and while attempting to carefully clean it myself (after watching some video guides), I accidentally damaged the clips that hold the keycap in place. Now, the key doesn’t function properly.

I tried looking for replacement keycaps or third-party repair services both online and offline in Bengaluru, but couldn’t find a reliable or trustworthy option.

I then visited the official Apple Service Center at Mantri Mall, Bengaluru. I was informed that Apple does not replace individual keys, and instead the entire top case (keyboard, battery, and more) would need to be replaced — at a cost of ₹40,000 (around $480 USD).

For context, I purchased the device for ₹65,000 (~$775 USD) with a student discount. Given this, the repair cost seems quite high for a single key issue.

I understand Apple follows strict repair protocols to maintain quality and consistency, but I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced something similar and found a cost-effective solution.

Also, I checked the trade-in value, which is around ₹23,000 (~$275 USD), but I’m not sure if that’s the best route either.

If anyone has suggestions or has dealt with something similar, I’d really appreciate your input.

Thank you in advance!

I somehow fixed it.

As long as only the key cap itself is damaged or even the white scissor mechanism, then Apple can replace just the scissor and/or key cap....at least in the US, I don't know if a Key Cap kit is available for other regional keyboard variations. Unfortunately the Apple Store may not do this depending on how they handle repairs, but an Apple Authorized Service Provider should be able to order the scissor kit and/or key cap kit. I don't think most Apple techs realize Apple provides these kits. The downside is these kits include scissors and key caps for every key....individual ones cannot be purchased. So instead of a low cost $1 it may cost $100 for the kit(s)....no idea what an AASP would charge to help mitigate their risk.

Another option is carefully removing the key cap and/or scissor from a broken laptop and using the removed part. Sometimes repair centers will do this if they end up with removed Top Case/Keyboard Assemblies where the keyboard no longer functions. It is a bit tricky since Apple will sometimes use different manufacturers to make their keyboards which can use slightly different scissor mechanisms & key caps.

There are third parties out there selling key caps & scissor mechanisms for various Apple laptop keyboards. The good vendors will make it very easy to identify which key cap & scissor mechanism is compatible with your specific laptop.

FYI, when removing & reinstall key caps & scissors......extreme care must be taken since these parts are very fragile & easily damaged. It doesn't help that some keys release in one direction while others in a different direction, then there are the numerous regional variations which may be different yet again.

Thank you, Tim – I understand and respect that this is a user forum and policies are set by Apple.

I only asked because, here in India, we primarily have Apple Authorised Service Providers (AASPs), and prices or service experiences can sometimes vary slightly from one provider to another, despite all being authorized. We currently have just one Apple-owned and operated store with a Genius Bar in the entire country, so access to standardized support is relatively limited geographically.

Hence, I was trying to explore if there’s any flexibility or alternate route via Apple directly for key-level replacements, especially when the rest of the hardware is functioning perfectly.

Appreciate your time and response.
